Director’s Note
Welcome to the world premiere of Hurricane Kate! This marks the first full-length production by A Light in Dark Places, and it is a privilege to bring playwright Scott Golden’s deeply personal work to the stage.
I think we can all agree that 2025 has burst onto the scene like a storm, going from a category 3 to a category 5 in the snap of a finger—powerful and unpredictable. In times like these, creating art becomes an act of radical optimism. In the face of chaos, it is the role of artists to express, explore, and help society heal.
Hurricane Kate examines the natural disasters that shape our lives—both literal and metaphorical. It highlights the tension between resistance and acceptance of the great equalizers of humanity: death, loss, and the need for connection, with big splashes of sibling rivalry. These experiences are universal, regardless of our circumstances. Grief is not a linear journey; it is complex, messy, and sometimes it gets a little drunk.
This production has been its own storm, filled with challenges that often felt overwhelming. Each obstacle was met with the creativity and resilience of our incredible cast and crew. Their passion and adaptability have made this show possible, and I’m deeply grateful for their commitment. Like Jimmy Buffett sings, we went “surfing in a hurricane!”
At its heart, Hurricane Kate is about connection—the need to be seen and understood by those we love. It explores the many ways we grieve and the varied responses to loss, emphasizing that there is no right or polite way to mourn. As we journey through this narrative, I invite you to reflect on your own experiences and find your truths within the storm.
Thank you for being here. Your presence is crucial (and appreciated). Please tell everyone you know to come see us!
I hope you enjoy the show.
